He is client and solution focused, with a real strength being an ability to think radically, challenge accepted norms and behaviours and produce solutions. He is able to operate strategically, supporting the merger of authorities, developing a vision and mission for various organisations and identify opportunities for the development of business cases and options for new models of service delivery. He is able to convey persuasive tough decisions that help drive out multi million pound efficiencies and well as radical service improvements. And to translate these into deliverables that can be communicated to all stakeholders.

With a background of almost 30 years in the public sector, which began in the Ministry of Defence where he had a varied career at both Headquarters and front line Commands in roles including of policy, strategy, HR, procurement, training and finance. His final role with the Ministry of Defence was as a senior manager in RAF Strike Command’s management consultancy team. He then worked for the Cabinet Office, before moving into the world of local government as a consultant, where, for around the last 10 years he has supported virtually all areas of local authority delivery, and at all tiers. His experience ranges from social care and environmental services to enabling support services, which gives him an innate understanding of what makes councils ‘tick’.

John is at ease engaging with people at all levels, from chief executives and senior managers, politicians and members, front line staff and their customers and citizens. He has a real passion for supporting a sustainable future public sector and in helping to deliver both public and social value and ensures that all his work delivers the right, not the easy, outcome.
When not thinking about public sector improvement he can be found thinking about improvement to his own recently bought cottage – now he just needs to do something about it!
